Story detail:

Snow White

Once upon a time, there was a princess who had skin as white as snow, lips as red as blood, and hair as black as ebony. She was named Snow White.

The Queen, who was Snow White’s stepmother, had a magic mirror and she used to ask it, “Who is fairest of us all?” It would answer, “You are fairest of them all.”

Snow White was growing prettier and prettier, far more so than the queen herself. When she realised that Snow White was fairer than her, she was shocked and hated her from that moment onwards.

Finally, she said to a huntsman, "Take the child out into the woods, put her to death and bring me her heart for a token."

The huntsman had pity on Snow White and let her go. Then he killed a young, wild boar and took its heart to the Queen as a token.

The poor child began to run through the forest. The wild beasts went after her but they did her no harm.

She came to a little house and went inside to rest. Everything in there was very small, but as clean and tidy as possible.

There was a little table with seven little plates, and seven drinking-cups. Snow White ate from each plate a little meat, and drank out of each cup a little a drop of wine.

After that, she felt so tired that she lay down on the seventh bed which was the right size for her, and fell asleep.

The masters of the house were seven dwarfs. When they came home, they saw beautiful Snow White lying there asleep. They were so full of joy to see her and let her sleep on.

When Snow White awoke and saw them, she was very frightened, but when they seemed quite friendly, she told them her story. The dwarfs allowed her to stay with them, and she kept their house in good order.

In the morning, the dwarfs went to the mountain to dig for gold. In the evening they came home and their soup had to be ready for them.

One day the magic mirror told the Queen that Snow White was still alive. The Queen was very angry and knew that the huntsman must have deceived her.

She went to her secret chamber and made a poisonous apple. Then she made herself like a peasant woman and went to where the seven dwarfs lived.

She knocked at the door, showed the apple, and asked Snow White to take a bite. The apple was cunningly made so that she took a bite from the poisoned half. Then she fell to the ground without breathing.

The dwarfs made a coffin of clear glass for Snow White, and wept and lamented for three whole days. However, she still looked as if she was alive.
